CONROE/LAKE CONROE
Conroe
Settled in 1881, Conroe was for many years a sleepy agricultural town, weathering economic booms in first the timber and then the oil industries. Today, this bedroom community 40 miles north of downtown Houston has a population of approximately 45,000, and has attracted a wealth of manufacturing, retail, health care, and construction companies. A growing and livable community, the city of Conroe has a low crime rate, quality education system, and a friendly, small-town atmosphere.
Ranch-style Living
Conroe residents truly appreciate the community's quiet, country feel. The area's rolling pine-covered terrain is dotted with lakes and hugs the southern fringe of the Big Thicket National Preserve. The availability of ranch properties - 60 to 100+ acres - distinguishes the Conroe real estate market. The large plots accommodate a true ranch lifestyle, including space to keep horses or other livestock. A wide range of housing options is available, such as ample waterfront properties in the fast-developing Lake Conroe area.
Leisure Activities
Conroe is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts - for starters, there are the 21 city parks and the area's 10 golf courses. The most popular attraction is 21,000-acre Lake Conroe. Many residents spend their downtime boating, swimming, or fishing the lake for catfish, bass, and crappie. Or, they can escape even further into nature by hiking in Sam Houston National Forest, adjacent to the lake.
Conroe also offers urban leisure pursuits, such as shopping in its premier outlet center with more than 70 stores. The town is also known for its array of antique and collectible shops.
