Downtown Houston
In the downtown Houston area, the residential housing options are varied, but they have at least one thing in common: all offer the opportunity to experience the vibrant heart of this amazing city first-hand. Since its humble beginnings in 1836, when the Allen brothers landed on the banks of Buffalo Bayou, the Houston downtown area has undergone a major renaissance. Today painstakingly preserved commercial buildings stand aside modern skyscrapers, and residential lofts and condominiums in historic buildings share space with new high-rise residential towers.
Downtown residents are a mix of young professionals, empty-nesters and downtown business owners and employees, who enjoy a vibrant collection of restaurants, bars, shopping centers, hotels and art galleries right outside their doors. Sports fans appreciate the proximity of the home teams: the Houston Astros play at Minute Maid Park, and the Houston Rockets and Houston Comets play in their own downtown arena, Toyota Center.
Downtown Real Estate
Downtown Houston includes part of the old Fourth Ward, the Theater District, the Historic District and the blocks surrounding Minute Maid Park. Lofts take center stage in the downtown residential scene, either newly built or those located in renovated buildings. No fewer than 10 loft projects are conversions of existing historical buildings, most located in the Historic District (although others are located in an area known as the Shopping District). In addition, there are several luxury condominiums and residential buildings. Residential options come in a variety of price ranges, the most luxurious rivaling the prices of Manhattan.
Developers have spent billions of dollars making the downtown Houston area one of the most appealing places to live in all of Houston, even constructing three major highways for greater accessibility. Adding to the convenience is a light rail system connecting downtown with the Medical Center and Astrodome.
