MEMORIAL, EAST OF BELTWAY 8
Memorial
The Memorial residential area, located west of the Galleria, is home to some of Houston's most expensive and luxurious homes. The exclusive neighborhoods considered to be included in this area lie between the 610-Loop on the east, Highway 6 on the west, 1-10 on the north and Buffalo Bayou on the south.
Within Memorial's miles of large lots, beautiful trees and pristine lawns is an area known as The Villages, which includes the independent municipalities of Hunters Creek, Piney Point, Hedwig, Bunker Hill and Spring Valley. These cities, found west of Chimney Rock Road, operate autonomously of the city of Houston, with a shared fire department, police department, water system and political system.
Neighborhoods
At Memorial's east end is Stablewood, a gated luxury-home community developed in the 1990s. The spacious lots in neighboring Bayou Woods, Sherwood Forest and Pinewood Estates are a sublime backdrop for both large older and new-construction homes.
Surrounding neighborhoods include Sandlewood, where the homes surround three lakes that are popular spots for boating, swimming and fishing, as well as Memorial Forest, Whispering Oaks, Frostwood, Tealwood, Fonn Villas and Memorial Pines.
Houston's continued western real estate expansion, coupled with the beauty and size of the lots in Memorial, ensure the continued growth and popularity of this area.
Amenities
Memorial's eastern end is anchored by The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa, long known as one of the finest hotels in the city. The Houstonian is situated on an 18-acre wooded oasis at 610-Loop near Memorial Drive.
Along Gessner and Beltway-8 ("The Belt"), upscale shopping, dining and entertainment venues are plentiful.
Memorial City Mall is also located in the area, as is Town and Country shopping center.
Schools
Students who live in Memorial attend schools in the award-winning Spring Branch Independent School District (rather than the Houston Independent School District). High-school students in the eastern part of Memorial attend Memorial High School. There are also several award-winning private schools in the area including Kinkaid and Duchesne.
