Midtown
One of the best things about Midtown Houston is the classic "three l's" of real estate: location, location, location!
Located just south of downtown Houston, bordered by the Montrose area and U.S. Highway 59, the aptly named Midtown enjoys an ideal urban location-it is close to downtown, enjoys convenient access to the METRO Rail (there are three stations within its boundaries) and is readily accessible from any part of the city. The district is also close to Hermann Park, the Medical Center and Rice University.
Midtown currently includes approximately 617 acres of land within its boundaries, 365 of which are developable.
History
In the early 1900s, Midtown began to flourish as the second residential neighborhood in Houston, after Allen's Landing. At the time, it was known as Southside Place and was comprised mostly of single-family Victorian homes on small lots. Many of these homes were occupied by families of the original founders of the Humble Oil & Refinery Company.
The area began to decline in the 1980s and 1990s due to a decline in oil production. Today, a successful Midtown revitalization effort is underway.
Real Estate
Midtown real estate includes both new construction and restored historical spaces, including apartments, lofts and condos, in a range of prices. The convenient, quality housing, which is integrated with retail and commercial facilities, creates a community that attracts all income levels and ethnic groups and unites them in a lively urban environment.
The urban revitalization of the district is overseen by the Midtown Redevelopment Authority and the Midtown Management District, with the support of Houston city government and public utilities.
Many residents of Midtown send their kids to nearby J. Will Jones Elementary School, Gregory Lincoln Education Center (for primary and secondary school) and Lamar High School.
