Welcome To Museum District

Officially recognized by the City of Houston in 1989, the Houston Museum District began as an association of 20 museums, galleries, cultural centers and community organizations dedicated to promoting art, science, history and culture.

Bordered roughly by Rice University, Midtown and the Texas Medical Center, the Museum District today has a broader scope that encompasses neighborhoods surrounding the Mecom Fountain in Hermann Park in addition to area museums. Southampton, the Boulevards, Montrose, Shadyside, and Southgate neighborhoods are all referred to as part of the Museum District.

Museums and cultural centers in the Museum District include Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Asia Society Texas Center, Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, Children’s Museum of Houston, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Czech Center Museum Houston, DiverseWorks, The Health Museum, Holocaust Museum Houston, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Houston Center for Photography, Houston Museum of African American Culture, Houston Zoo, The John C. Freeman Weather Museum, The Jung Center, Lawndale Art Center, The Menil Collection, Rice University Art Gallery, and The Rothko Chapel.
